Back in 1979 Atari released to the world the arcade game Asteroids which had a simple yet addicting premise. You are the pilot of a ship and had to destroy asteroids which would break down into smaller and smaller asteroids and from time to time you would encounter an enemy ship that would shoot at you. Again simple premise but as with most classic games very addicting and fun to play. There have been many ports and clones of the same basic formula.

Fast forward to 1993 when probably the best clone of Asteroids was released on the Commodore Amiga Stardust coded by Bloodhouse. At its heart it was Asteroids, but they added powerups, the use of raytraced graphics and several different styles of game level to break up the feel of the game from time to time. I always remembered fondly the "3D Tunnel" levels where your viewpoint changes to a behind the ship view flying through a tunnel while avoiding and or shooting obstacles. And on other levels it features a maze like area where you had to pilot the ship and not crash into the walls. However these were few and far between the main part of the game which were the Asteroid like levels usually punctuaded with a big boss battle.

In 1996 Bloodhouse released Super Stardust which had better graphics than the original thanks in part to using the AGA chipset on later model Amiga machines namely the 1200 and the 4000 models. And a full CD soundtrack if you got the CD version of the game.

Now in 2007 Sony and Housemarque released on the Playstation 3 and Playstation Portable Super Stardust HD which brings that classic Asteroids feel to the latest generation of consoles sporting some rich graphics amazing soundtrack it is by far the best rendition of Asteroids to date. it did loose the tunnel and maze like levels from the originals but you will not miss them at all. So if you had an Amiga and own a PS3 I would suggest you give this game a go.
