Workbench is the Amigas answer to Windows. It is the computers operating system. Most games at the start were self loading and you did not need the Workbench. But once hard drives became part of the Amiga many games gave you the option to install on the hard drive thereby loading through the Workbench. It was also one of the first true multi taksing operating systems so much so that when I first moved into a Windows PC running Windows 95 I found myself there were things that Workbench would do better vs Windows 95.
